Meet ‘Amsterthem’: Shortcutz’s New Film Project Aiming to Portray Amsterdam's Vibrant Soul
Amsterdam, a vital hub of multiculturalism and creative expression, now has ‘Amsterthem’, a project that celebrates the city's diversity and its burgeoning talent of filmmakers. Developed by Shortcutz Amsterdam in collaboration with Canon, Aputure, DGD (Dutch Directors Guild), MiMM (Muziekinstituut MultiMedia), Vocas, and SuperHeroes Amsterdam, Amsterthem aims to capture the captivating stories of Amsterdammers through seven short film portraits.
Amsterdam stands as a symbol of multiplicity, influencing its inhabitants and inspiring cities both within the Netherlands and worldwide. As the Dutch film industry experiences a surge in new talent, innovative approaches, and unconventional storytelling, Amsterthem seeks to showcase the essence of Amsterdam and its remarkable residents. Through this project, selected teams will receive all the necessary resources to bring their films to life, including equipment, production funding, and expert guidance.
Amsterthem encompasses two phases.
● A nationwide open call invites up-and-coming filmmakers to submit their one-page film pitches, capturing the essence of Amsterdammers. A seasoned jury team will review submissions and select one exceptional pitch per district. The jury team will be announced throughout the call for submissions.
● In the Spring of 2025, Amsterthem will culminate in a series of seven outdoor screenings hosted in each district of Amsterdam. These screenings will provide a platform for filmmakers and documentary subjects to engage with the communities through Q&A sessions, fostering a shared experience and celebration of Amsterdam's diversity. The screenings will be free and open to everyone, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility throughout the city's neighborhoods: Centrum, Oost, West, Nieuw-West, Noord, Zuid, and Zuidoost.
Professional Support for Teams
Selected teams participating in Amsterthem will receive substantial support, including:
● €3,500 in cash for production
● Canon's comprehensive provision of cameras, lenses, and expert assistance
● Aputure's specialized lighting equipment and audio support through their sister company
● Dutch Directors Guild (DDG) offers mentorship programs with four experienced directors
● Muziekinstituut MultiMedia (MiMM) provides mentorship programs for music composers
