Krakow Film Music Festival opens applications for FMF Young Talent Award

FMF Young Talent Award 2023

Krakow Film Music Festival is accompanied by the FMF Young Talent Award for the eleventh time. This international competition is a perfect opportunity for aspiring composers to rise to the attention of the industry and the public. We will hear the winning composition performed live during one of the festival concerts.

FMF is one of the most important film music festivals in the world. Spectacles held during the festival showcase top quality musicians and innovation in terms of audiovisual technologies. All this means that FMF is a favourite with some of the greatest composers of our era, including Hans Zimmer, Jan A.P. Kaczmarek and John Powell.

The FMF Young Talent Award is open to composers aged between 18 and 35. The main aim of the competition is to reveal the most talented young composers working today and to introduce their work to the public, including representatives of the global film industry. Previous editions have seen over 700 entrants from dozens of countries around the globe, and winners of the main prize have gone on to achieve major successes on the international market.

The task facing this year’s participants is to compose music to a selected excerpt from the film 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible. The protagonist of Torquil Jones’s documentary is the Nepalese climber Nimsdai Purja who took on the seemingly impossible feat of climbing all 14 eight-thousanders in just over six months. You can see the film on Netflix.

The entries will be assessed by an international jury led by Miriam Cutler – an Emmy-nominated composer specialising in documentaries, producer, educator and co-founder of the Alliance for Women Film Composers. The jury is also joined by Nainita Desai – author of the original soundtrack from 14 Peaks.

The jury will select winners of the first, second and third prize. The winner will receive the FMF Young Talent Award 2023 statuette and the opportunity to perform their composition live during the 16th Film Music Festival in Krakow, held between 23 and 30 May 2023. Additionally the authors of twelve best works will take part in prestigious workshops for up-and-coming composers led by experts from the film music industry.

You have until 8 January 2023 to submit your entries.

Krakow Film Music Festival is organised by the City of Kraków, KBF and RMF Classic.
