Martijn Bressers - Composer, Producer & Musician

Up-and-coming Dutch media composers show their recent work and tell us who they are

Hi, nice to meet you! I'm Martijn, and I help film projects discover their unique musical tone of voice.

My musical journey began with the clarinet, but it was the purchase of an electric guitar that truly ignited my passion. Using an old microphone amplifier connected to a hi-fi speaker, I taught myself to play, falling in love with the instrument and its endless possibilities.

Originally from Eindhoven, I moved to Utrecht in 2010 to study guitar at the Herman Brood Academy, graduating in 2013. After performing with various bands and acts, I recognized the need to further refine my skills. This led me to pursue a degree in Composition & Music Production at the University of the Arts Utrecht (HKU), where I graduated in 2021 and later earned my master’s degree in 2023. During this time, I discovered my passion for composing for film, where I could blend my love for music with visual storytelling.

With experience in various orchestras and bands, I have a broad understanding of what can be achieved in sound and music. While I deeply appreciate analog instruments, I'm equally comfortable working digitally, always seeking out challenges that push me out of my comfort zone and drive me to use the right tools for each project.

For the short documentary portrait CHICO, about an ara living with her caregiver in the heart of Amsterdam, I transformed samples of the ara’s sharp calls into a synth pad. In the composition I combined them with a minimal woodwind section, led by the clarinet to mimic her speech-like rhythms. This blend of digital and analog elements is a hallmark of my work.

Together with composer Jurrian Marx and sound-designer Bram van Bergen we form ThirdWave Audio where we combine our crafts to enhance audio experiences.

More about Amsterthem

In a small house, the down-to-earth 72-year-old Leendert lives with his colorful macaw, Chico. Day and night, this vibrant bird is his center of attention, for whom he has unconditional love. Despite his youthful affection for Chico, Leendert is growing older. However, Chico is 16 and could live to be 90 to 100 years old. Leendert's greatest concern is what will happen to Chico when he's no longer around.

The symbiotic relationship between Leendert and Chico symbolizes the human longing for love, with an ever-present shadow side. In this subtly poetic and intimate portrait, we explore Leendert's relationship with his macaw. How far will one go for love?
