Up-and-coming Dutch media composers show their recent work and tell us who they are

Steven started playing the saxophone at the age of eight, and, due to his perceived talent, he was invited at age twelve to join a pre-education program to prepare for the Conservatory of Maastricht. By that time, he had already begun composing music and immediately knew that this was his true passion, even more than studying the saxophone. This passion led him to study Classical Composition at the Conservatory of Tilburg. During his studies, he was admitted to a minor program in film scoring at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. He graduated in 2020.

He then pursued a master’s degree at Berklee College of Music, focusing on scoring for film, television, and video games. This program allowed him to refine his skills in instrumentation, orchestration, and recording. Graduating in July 2021, he earned special recognition for "excellent academic performance." Renowned for his versatility, Steven’s expertise spans a wide range of skills. From creating fully orchestrated mockups to real recordings and custom sound designs, his workflow in Logic Pro (Digital Audio Workstation) gives him access to thousands of samples and virtual instruments. This offers limitless possibilities to create unique samples and sounds.

Steven completes his mixes in advance to streamline the production process and creates space for valuable team feedback. He works closely with the production team, firmly believing that live collaboration is essential for a successful partnership Steven’s portfolio includes music for films such as Human Recipe, Crossing Bunny Bridge, and Buitenwesten, as well as commercials for companies like 8vance and Hunke. He has also contributed orchestration, recording, and mixing expertise to projects such as Rude Awakening and the KNVB Beker Anthem (Dutch Football Association). His most recent work, Magic Forest, is an adventure fantasy score available on Spotify since September 2024.

Magic Forest

"Magic Forest” is an orchestral fantasy score featuring epic and beautiful passages. It tells the story of Howard, who is forced to flee his home when war breaks out. He finds refuge in a magical forest, where he encounters a variety of characters who aid him on his journey to defeat evil."

Toto KNVB beker Anthem

I had the opportunity to orchestrate and record the new anthem for the Dutch National Soccer League, with original music composed by byRaven and Majorfifth.

Crossing Bunny Bridge, Original score

Crossing Bunny Bridge is a surreal animated film about a group of rabbits crossing a bridge in search of a new home. Their journey leads them to a place where the God of Life descends, and this marks the beginning of their new habitat. As the rabbits settle into their new surroundings, a new arrival completes the cycle: the God of Death enters the city, bringing balance to the system. The original music was recorded at Air Studios in London.

Human Recipe, Original score

"Human Recipe" is an experimental animated short created by Michelle de Groot. It explores the question: How does our relationship with food set us apart from the rest of the animal kingdom? Composing the score for this project required me to step far out of my comfort zone, experimenting with a range of unusual sounds and effects. Although the piece was made in 2020, I still have a deep appreciation for this score because of how unique and different it turned out to be.
